Local forging manufacturer mentors aspiring USC mechanical engineering students
USC Mechanical Engineering program looks to Southern California forging manufacturer, Aluminum Precision Products (APP), to help mentor students. With over 50 years of history, APP is extending their experience and knowledge of the forging industry to future engineers by providing a real world case study.
Santa Ana, CA (December 16, 2015)— Local forging manufacturer, Aluminum Precision Products Inc. (APP), has been in the forging business for 50 years, celebrating their anniversary just this year. When approached by USC Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Ted Mayeshiba, to allow his students to study APP’s business and production structure Director of Engineering, John Haroldson, thought what better way to kick off the next 50 years of business. The idea is for student project teams to get real world experience and a closer perspective of the effects of their designs. The students have been tasked to offer proposed new methods of efficiency and alternative process recommendations to improve quality, timeliness, and revenue. A student diagnostic has been performed during the fall semester followed by a detailed solution design developed by the students during their second semester. Aluminum Precision Product’s Director of Engineering, John Haroldson says, “We here at APP understand that investing in our future is what sustains our business. It’s great to have the ability to mentor future engineers that we are also gaining insight from”. APP has asked that the USC students concentrate on the wheel forging line of business. Vice President of Business Development and Wheel Division Director Terry Seibert says, “We asked the students to focus on one line of business so that they could get the most out of this experience. There are many variables that can affect the forging production bottom line. Our hope is that we as a group can develop one of their proposed approaches as an enhancement to our current production process. It is programs like this, and listening to progressive ideas, that has allowed APP to celebrate 50 years of business.”
