Closed Die Forgings

Closed die forging shapes forging stock accurately within a die cavity to achieve specific engineering configurations. The metal is confined within shaped dies, which may range from complex multi-segmented precision wrap dies to simple two-piece conventional designs, depending on project requirements.

APP employs multiple press technologies for our closed die forgings. Hydraulic presses squeeze metal slowly for controlled deformation. Mechanical presses complete forgings with quick, powerful blows using flywheel energy. Upsetters (horizontal mechanical presses) apply force to metal stock between dies. Our sales and engineering team will guide you to the appropriate process based on your production needs and budget specifications.

The key advantages of closed die forging include near-net shapes requiring minimal finishing, cost-effectiveness for high-volume production, and superior mechanical properties compared to other metal forming processes due to the optimized internal grain structure.

Conventional Forgings

The conventional forging process places aluminum material between two dies with precisely designed upper and lower impressions that form the desired shape. As force is applied, the metal flows to fill the die cavities, creating a strong part with optimized grain structure.

At APP, conventional forgings are produced using either a single pair of dies for simpler geometries or multiple impression dies for complex parts. This approach allows for cost-effective production while maintaining excellent mechanical properties. These forgings typically include draft angles for easier removal and may require additional machining to achieve final dimensions.

Precision Forgings

Precision forgings represent the highest level of forging technology, characterized by their exceptional dimensional accuracy and minimal need for secondary operations. These sophisticated components feature 0 to 1 degree draft angles, thin sections, close tolerances, small radii, and superior surface finishes that significantly reduce or eliminate the need for subsequent machining.

At APP, our precision forging capabilities allow us to create near-net shape components that maximize material efficiency while delivering optimal mechanical properties. This approach is particularly valuable for complex aerospace components and high-performance automotive parts where weight reduction, material conservation, and superior strength are critical design requirements.
